Why Some Bible Stories Stay With Us for Life

Maybe you have heard the saying that childhood is the ground we walk on for the rest of our lives. And it is true.

When we talk about this stage of life, however, we almost always think about trauma and difficult experiences.

But positive experiences leave their mark too.

A child’s brain is still developing. Stories filled with emotion, safety, connection, and meaning can stay with them for many years.

That is why I transformed the story of Jonah and the whale into a therapeutic tool for children.

Much More Than Telling a Bible Story

I love resources that allow children to touch, move, imagine, and retell a story.

When a child places Jonah inside the whale, takes him out, puts him in the boat, and recreates the story with their own hands, they are not simply listening. They are participating.

From there, we can talk about fear, choices, repentance, asking for help, and trusting God.

All of this makes the story a valuable resource for parents, churches, teachers, and therapists.

The Message I Want a Child to Carry for Life

It does not matter where you are or how far you have wandered.

If you call, God can still hear you.

I think about this often as both a mother and a psychologist, because that seven-year-old child will grow up. One day, they may feel lost, make difficult decisions, or believe they have gone too far.

And perhaps they will remember Jonah.

Maybe they will not remember every detail, but one certainty may remain:

I can call.

God still hears me here.

That is one of the most important gifts we can leave with a child.

I Know This as a Daughter, Too

My mother told me the story of Jonah many times.

I grew up, and I also had moments when I wandered away. But that message stayed with me: I could call, and God would hear me.

Today, as a psychologist, I understand that stories repeated within safe relationships can become internal reference points. A small memory can reactivate all the meaning built around it.

That is why we do not need to think only about what we want to protect our children from experiencing. We can also choose what we want to help them carry with them.

That Is Why I Created Jonah & the Whale

At Creative & Mind, I did not want to create just beautiful characters from a Bible story.

I wanted children to experience the story: to hold Jonah, place him in the boat, take him inside the whale, retell the narrative, and talk about what it awakens in them.

The toy may become small as the years go by.

But I hope the message remains:

I can still call.

God still knows where I am.

And He still hears me.

As a psychologist, I understand the value of childhood experiences. As a mother, I know how much we want to prepare our children for a world we cannot control.

And as a Christian, there is one truth I would like every child to carry with them:

You are never too far away to call out to God.

Perhaps that is why some stories deserve to be told again and again.
